Network connection certification
Grid connection certification is a formal verification process that confirms whether an electricity generation plant — such as a photovoltaic system, Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), or CHP plant — meets all technical requirements for connection to the public power grid.
The objective is the safe and grid-compliant integration of the system in accordance with the requirements of grid operators and technical standards.
Legal basis & standards
In Germany, grid connection certification is primarily based on:
- VDE application rules, particularly VDE-AR-N 4110 (medium voltage) and VDE-AR-N 4120 (high voltage)
- Requirements of the respective distribution or transmission system operator
- Technical connection rules (TAR) and, where applicable, regulations under EEG or EnWG
Typical certification stages
- Preliminary plant certificate – used during planning to assess grid compatibility (type B/C plants)
- Unit certificate – certification of technical components such as inverters, storage systems, or grid protection units
- Plant certificate – verification of the overall system regarding power quality, protection behavior, and grid compliance
- Declaration of conformity / test report – final documentation required for grid connection approval and feed-in authorization
