Grid connection certification is a formal verification process that confirms whether an electricity generation plant — such as a photovoltaic system, Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), or CHP plant — meets all technical requirements for connection to the public power grid.
The objective is the safe and grid-compliant integration of the system in accordance with the requirements of grid operators and technical standards.

Legal basis & standards

In Germany, grid connection certification is primarily based on:

  • VDE application rules, particularly VDE-AR-N 4110 (medium voltage) and VDE-AR-N 4120 (high voltage)
  • Requirements of the respective distribution or transmission system operator
  • Technical connection rules (TAR) and, where applicable, regulations under EEG or EnWG

Typical certification stages

  • Preliminary plant certificate – used during planning to assess grid compatibility (type B/C plants)
  • Unit certificate – certification of technical components such as inverters, storage systems, or grid protection units
  • Plant certificate – verification of the overall system regarding power quality, protection behavior, and grid compliance
  • Declaration of conformity / test report – final documentation required for grid connection approval and feed-in authorization

  • Ground-mounted PV systems from approx. 135 kW (typically medium-voltage connection)
  • Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) with grid feed-in in commercial and industrial applications

  • Energy projects with technical certification requirements for funding programs
