An inverter is a central component in photovoltaic and battery energy storage systems (BESS). It converts generated or stored direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC) — the type of electricity used in buildings, commercial facilities and the public power grid.

How it works

PV systems and battery storage systems produce or store electricity as direct current (DC). To be used in electrical systems or fed into the public grid, this electricity must be converted into grid-compatible alternating current (AC).

The inverter performs this conversion and manages the flow of electricity within the energy system.

Modern inverters also provide additional system functions, such as:

• grid monitoring and synchronization
• feed-in control and power regulation
• emergency power or island operation
• communication with the Energy Management System (EMS)
