Inverter

An inverter converts direct current into alternating current and is essential for photovoltaic and battery storage systems, enabling grid connection, control and energy management.

Inverter

An inverter is a central component in photovoltaic and battery energy storage systems (BESS). It converts generated or stored direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC) — the type of electricity used in buildings, commercial facilities and the public power grid.

How it works

PV systems and battery storage systems produce or store electricity as direct current (DC). To be used in electrical systems or fed into the public grid, this electricity must be converted into grid-compatible alternating current (AC).

The inverter performs this conversion and manages the flow of electricity within the energy system.

Modern inverters also provide additional system functions, such as:

• grid monitoring and synchronization
• feed-in control and power regulation
• emergency power or island operation
• communication with the Energy Management System (EMS)

Typical applications

PV systems: converting solar power for on-site consumption or grid feed-in
Battery storage systems: controlling charging and discharging processes
Emergency power or island operation with black start capability
• Integration with smart meters and EMS for intelligent energy management
• Participation in grid-supporting services (e.g. frequency stabilization or reactive power control)

Key figures

Rated power (kW): maximum conversion capacity of the inverter
Efficiency (%): typically around 96–98% for modern devices
Number of MPP trackers: optimization of multiple PV strings with different orientations
Hybrid capability: ability to connect PV systems and battery storage in one device
Communication interfaces: e.g. Modbus, LAN, WLAN, or cloud platforms

Summary

Inverters are essential for the operation of photovoltaic and battery storage systems. They ensure that electricity can be converted, controlled and integrated into the grid or building infrastructure.

When selecting an inverter, companies should focus on high efficiency, system compatibility and integration with energy management systems, especially when planning PV systems combined with battery storage.
