Atypical network usage

Atypical network usage lowers grid charges for companies with flexible electricity consumption — by shifting load outside peak load periods.

Atypical network usage

Atypical network usage is a legally regulated model under Section 19 (2) of the German Electricity Network Charges Ordinance (Stromnetzentgeltverordnung, StromNEV), which gives companies with flexible electricity consumption the opportunity to pay significantly reduced performance-based grid charges on a permanent basis — provided that electricity consumption is deliberately shifted outside peak load periods in the power grid.

How it works

Companies normally pay grid charges based on their highest load (kW) during the year. However, if they deliberately shift their electricity consumption outside the peak load time windows defined by grid operators — for example through process control or battery storage — they can apply to the grid operator for a reduction.

The condition: During peak load periods, electricity consumption must be significantly lower than outside these periods.

Typical applications

 • Industrial and commercial companies with flexible electricity consumption (e.g. cooling, machine operating times)
 • Use of battery storage systems for load shifting
 • PV systems in combination with energy management systems that specifically control grid consumption
 • Companies that want to adapt their processes intelligently to grid conditions

Key figures & influencing factors

 • Peak load time window: varies depending on the grid operator
 • Load profile data: measurement every 15 minutes required (RLM meter)
 • Application deadline: by 30 September for the following year with the responsible grid operator
 • Proof: the share of load outside the peak load time windows must be significantly higher
 • Savings potential: depending on the load profile, €10,000 to more than €100,000 per year possible

Summary

Atypical network usage is a highly attractive optimization tool for companies with flexible electricity consumption. Those who deliberately shift loads or use battery storage systems can permanently reduce grid charges — without investing in additional power generation.

At BEO

We regularly integrate atypical network usage into our storage solutions. Our battery storage systems reduce our customers’ load peaks in a targeted manner within peak load time windows.
