Electricity tax (Stromsteuer)
What is it?
Electricity tax is a federal excise tax on every kilowatt hour consumed. In 2026 it amounts to 2.05 ct per kWh; your electricity supplier collects it with your bill and pays it to the state.
Relief
Companies in manufacturing and other producing industries (Produzierendes Gewerbe) as well as agriculture and forestry can have most of the electricity tax refunded.
Special grid usage surcharge (Aufschlag für besondere Netznutzung)
What is it?
The special grid usage surcharge is a levy used to spread the cost of grid fee reductions for certain large consumers and the additional costs of regions with a particularly high expansion of renewable energy across Germany. In 2026 it amounts to 1.559 ct per kWh.
Relief
From 1 GWh of annual consumption per site, the surcharge on the electricity above that falls significantly.
Concession fee (Konzessionsabgabe)
What is it?
Energy suppliers pay the concession fee to the municipality for running their power lines through public roads and paths. It is passed on to customers; for companies on special contracts (Sondervertragskunden) in 2026 it is at most 0.11 ct per kWh.
Relief
If your electricity price is below an official threshold price, the concession fee does not apply.
CHP and offshore grid levies (KWKG- und Offshore-Netzumlage)
What is it?
Two levies paid by all electricity customers: the CHP levy funds support for plants that generate electricity and heat at the same time (combined heat and power). The offshore grid levy funds the connection of offshore wind farms to the grid. In 2026 they amount to 1.387 ct per kWh in total.
Relief
Electricity-intensive industries pay only a fraction of these levies upon application.
